From the American School Counselor Association:
What Does a School Counselor Do?
Parents, administrators, teachers and students considering a career in school counseling often wonder just what it is school counselors do on a daily basis. Why do we need school counselors anyway? On a daily basis, school counselors are involved in character education, violence prevention, career planning and much more.
The Role of the School Counselor
Today's school counselors are vital members of the education team. They help all students in the areas of academic achievement, personal/social development and career development, ensuring today's students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow. Baltimore County's School Counselors run comprehensive school counseling programs that address the developmental needs of ALL students' academic, career, and social-emotional development. Our goal is to pave the way for our students to develop the plans and coping skills to proceed to their next step in life, whether that is the next grade, school, post-secondary training, or relationships. We can be most effective at this when we have the autonomy to plan our schedules around proactive developmental asset-building, then providing immediate assistance where needed, and also have the time to evaluate our effectiveness.
